Seminar Overview

Field trip and Seminars (FTS) is one of the most awaited subject of the curriculum of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in the University of Southeastern Philippines. This semester, our minor field trip was held in Synnex-Concentrix located in Damosa IT Park Lanang, Davao City. The purpose of having our minor field trip in Synnex-Concentrix was to gain knowledge and ideas on how BPO industry nowadays applying high tech innovations in their firms, how they support their clients’ demands and how they offer products and services to their clients in latest emerging technology. Having the chance to visit Synnex-Concentrix was a great privilege for us because we were able to see and understand how BPO industry really works in supporting the demands of their clients and make it to be a growing industry in the Philippines.

Day 1

We got the chance to visit the Synnex-Concentrix and all of my perceptions about the company were changed because I thought that Concentrix evolved only in BPO (call center) and nothing more, but basically, I was wrong. Now I know that it is not limited only in BPO but they also have technical supports and they accept Cisco trainings. I discovered also that they have different working fields such as programmers that were assigned in Netgears and in Application Development. Some are assigned as web developers and technical support and others were assigned also in the call floor who will take responsibility in the customer service. In addition, Concentrix offers customer service and technical supports for the Linksys products. Since Concentrix have a lot of branches internationally, they will have their meetings through video conference. They also showed us their servers and explained its usage and the possible effect if there are some technicalities happened.

What I learned?

As what our tour guide shared, I have learned that the things that we should possessed to be able to be part on their company is that we should be trained first to enhance our skills. We should be computer literate and must have good communication skills. Some of the staffs that were assigned in different field discussed and explained thoroughly the things that they do and their functions in the company. They told us that we should have enough knowledge in IT matters when we are assigned in their field. They also told us that confidentiality is really important in their work place. I learned also that the things that were thought by our instructor in our major subjects like programming are also applicable in Concentrix and since that we are IT students, as what they have said to us, we are very much welcome to be part on their company in the future.

What I liked?

The first thing that I liked the most when we visited there was that they welcomed us and they served and gave us the things that we want to know on their company especially on their services. They gave so much importance when it comes to their employees. They always have top performers every month and they have President’s Club awardee in which only those who have two years of experience in their company can avail their free vacation and other incentives. What I liked also is that it is not always endless work on their company but they also have activities and events and as what the motto of their employees, “We work hard, we party harder”. We also encounter and heard some of the employees talking to their customer over the phone in which I really like to hear. There were things that make me feel contented upon visiting in their premises because it is not all about on their work field or services were shared but also they gave us some important advices that could help us in which path we want to take someday like knowing deeply ourselves and our foundation.

What I didn’t like?

Technically, there was nothing I didn’t like about Synnex Concentrix. But there were instances that I got easily distracted with the staffs since I am really amazed how they speak English fluently so instead of listening carefully with what they have shared, I found myself imagining that what if someday I will be like them who can also speak English fluently and confidently.

APPENDIX

What can I recommend for the improvement of the advance seminar program of USEP?

It is really important to have seminar programs which are related to the course taken by the students and basically, the speakers of the seminar will be able to explain carefully and thoroughly the things that they want to convey as well as the concerns of the students and the organizers. I would suggest that the organizers of the advance seminar program would be able to find the perfect speaker and company with regards to the subject matters. Also, in choosing a company, as much as possible, it would be very helpful if that company is using high end technologies or if possible, would be able to present new kind of programs, software, or gadgets which could help the students to think for more innovative ideas. Also, it would be helpful if the students could experience using this technologies.

My advice to those who will take their advance seminar program in the near future.

For those students who will be taking up the FTS subject particularly the minor field trip, my advice is that they must have courage and confidence to grab the opportunity to ask any questions to the staffs or speakers if there are some clarifications regarding with the information given and to know some important information that the students really needed and want to know from their company. The students also must instil on their minds the things that they are doing and why they have this field trip is to gain knowledge and be aware with our society specifically in the IT industry. The students must also show obedience because they are just visitors and they must show some respect to other people in the work place since they are bringing the name of their school. They must learn to value and be thankful to the efforts that have shown to them such as answering the questions and giving the information they needed just to have knowledge and awareness regarding with their work.
